Neely’s Hurricane

I thought I would post a New Orleans themed drink to celebrate the beginning of Mardi Gras. The actual Mardi Gras is technically not until Tuesday the 21st, hence the name Fat Tuesday. However, the celebration starts the weekend (sometimes the week) leading up to Fat Tuesday. So let’s get this party started with a delowcious cajun style cocktail. You don’t get much more N’awlins than a Hurricane. Thankfully this one won’t wash your house away… It will however, wash your cares away. I thought this recipe would also be fitting to post on the eve of my friend Myra’s wedding. It was in fact a hurricane that brought her and her future hubby together. Myra and I went to SMU in Dallas, and my Hubby and her future hubby went to Tulane in New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina hit, the Tulane football team was evacuated to SMU. Long story short, they met and quickly fell for each other. The rest is history. Congratulations Myra and Bobby and Happy Mardi Gras!

Ingredients

  • Ice cubes
  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 2 ounces passion fruit juice
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • ½ lime, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon grenadine
  • 1 orange, sliced into wheels, for garnish

Directions

Fill the hurricane glasses with ice. Mix the rums, passion fruit juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine in an ice filled shaker. Strain into the hurricane glasses. Garnish with a wheel of orange.

Flirtini

Are there any Sex in the City fans out there? Well, then you have heard of a Flirtini. Remember, it’s the cocktail they were drinking with the drag queens at the end of Season 3? I thought it looked fun and delowcious, so I went out in search of the recipe and this is what I found…

Ingredients

  • ½ oz vodka
  • ½ oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 3 oz champagne
  • 1  marschino cherry, for garnish

Directions

Pour the vodka, Cointreau, and juice into an ice-filled mixing glass and stir. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Top with the champagne. Garnish with the maraschino cherry.

Skinny Girl Margarita

In honor of this month’s season premier of Bethenny Frankel’s show, Bethenny Ever After, I thought I would post the cocktail recipe where it all began. Yep, that’s right, Skinny Girl Margarita. Not only do I love her version of the margarita because it is healthier for you, but I also think it tastes way better. I hate when margaritas have too much of that sugary syrup crap in them. Skinny Girl Margaritas are way better and focus on what a cocktail should… The alcohol. However, I do have to warn you, these can be lethal if you are not careful. I drank a few too many a couple of weeks ago and definitely paid the price later. Luckily I was with some very good girlfriends who helped me make it home safely. Next time I will drink them a little slower ;)

Ingredients

  • 2 ounce(s) clear Tequila (Sauza or clear premium tequila)
  • A splash of fresh lime juice
  • A splash of Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec

Directions

Combine all ingredients over a glass of ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and salt (or sugar) if you’d like. Makes one serving. If you prefer a frozen Skinny Margarita, crush ice in a blender, then pour in ingredients.

  • 4 ounces limoncello or other lemon-flavored liqueur, chilled, plus 4 shots for serving
  • 4 ounces vanilla vodka, chilled

Cut the top third off each lemon. Cut a small slice off the bottom of each lemon so it stands up. Using a spoon, carefully scoop out the inside of each lemon, creating a lemon cup. Put the lemon cup in the freezer for at least 1 hour.

Put the sorbet into the bowl of a food processor. Add the limoncello and vodka and process until smooth. Place the frozen lemon cups onto shot glasses filled with limoncello. Fill the lemon shells with the sorbet mixture and serve.

  • Juice of 1 medium lime
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, torn
  • ¼ cup agave nectar
  • Soda water, chilled

Directions

Muddle the blackberries, lime juice, and basil with a wooden spoon into the bottom of a small glass pitcher.

Peach Cobbler Cocktail

Ingredients

  • Crushed ice
  • 2 to 2 ½ ounces rye whiskey
  • 2 ½ ounces peach nectar
  • Dash bitters
  • About 5 wedges frozen peaches, halved
  • 3 to 4 fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped
  • 1 lemon wedge

Directions

Fill a large wine goblet with crushed ice. Gently muddle the rye, peach nectar, dash of bitters, peaches, mint, and a squeeze of lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Pour over ice and serve cold.

Notes: At first, the rye can pack a real punch; as the ice and fruit melt, they mellow it into a wonderful summer drink.
